Frequently asked questions
What is Aikido?
Aikido is a Japanese martial art that nurtures mind, body, and spirit whilst fostering harmonious relationships and self-confidence. Rooted in traditional Aikido, Ki Aikido was developed to focus on the concept of Ki - the universal energy that flows through all things.
Consequently Ki Aikido is a modern martial art that emphasises harmony, relaxation and the co-ordination of mind and body. Ki Aikido focuses on Ki techniques, philosophy, and body dynamics for personal growth.
How does Aikido improve health?
Regular practice enhances physical well-being, mental clarity, and promotes a healthy spiritual disposition.
What are the benefits?
Aikido fosters self-confidence, harmonious relationships, and strengthens inner values through its unique training methods.
Unlike competitive martial arts, Ki Aikido is non-aggressive and non-competitive. Its practice teaches:
Calmness under pressure – responding to challenges with clarity and composure.
Natural movement – using posture and breathing to maintain balance and stability.
Mind-body coordination – developing awareness and control through Ki principles.
Is Aikido suitable for everyone?
Aikido is accessible from the age of 12 years old and welcomes all fitness levels, promoting inclusivity and personal development. Please contact Sensei Charlie Taylor to discuss your individual circumstances in confidence.
How often should I practise?
Consistent practice, ideally 2-3 times a week, maximizes benefits and enhances skill development.
Can Aikido help with stress?
Absolutely! Aikido’s focus on mindfulness and movement helps reduce stress and improve mental well-being.
Is there sparring in Ki Aikido?
There is no sparring in Ki Aikido below black belt. In a typical practice session, you may perform one or more techniques with a partner, but this is controlled and is non-competitive.
Ki Aikido is about co-operation. Competition does not traditionally exist in Aikido. We look to create harmony within ourselves and with others through the practice of Ki and movement.
